Scrapping of league finals part of new GAA proposal

The 2023 intercounty championship could be extended by one week with the All-Ireland football final moving from 23 to 30 July.

RTÉ Sport has learned that the GAA's Central Competitions Control Committee (CCCC) will ask Central Council to consider a number of proposed 2023 fixtures calendar changes this weekend.

Part of the proposal is that there will be no finals played across the four football league divisions.

Other significant suggestions are that round-robin games for both the Sam Maguire and Tailteann Cup competitions would take place in mid-May and played over three weekends.

It also appears that both the Leinster and Munster senior hurling finals could be played on the same day, 11 June.

Meanwhile, reports in Waterford have linked iconic defender Tony Browne with a possible link-up with new Tipperary senior hurling boss Liam Cahill in the new Premier backroom team.

Browne worked with Cahill as a Waterford selector this season and local reports suggest that the pair will again link up in 2023 – this time with the Tipp hurlers.
