Scottish Novice Championship gold joy for Castlemilk boxer

Boxing coach Archie Durie says he was proud of all of his fighters at the Scottish Novice Championships after emerging with a gold medal.

Castlemilk’s Lucas Ewan won in the 50kg category, and Durie says it won’t be the last from a promising fighter.

Ewan beat Blantyre Miners’ Welfare’s Callum Troy to take the top prize from the event at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility from February 4-6 and 11-13.

He was one of eight boxers to take something from the tournament, with Rajmund Turtak (71kg), William Lafferty (54kg), Jay Stewart (54kg), Tjay Bailkoski (57kg), Abe Renton (63-65kg), No Nawa (67kg) and Jamie Durie (60kg) all bowing out in their first rounds.

Archie said: “Lucas won his bout well, controlling the distance in this bout with his lead hand jab catching Callum Troy to take this bout by unanimous decision.

“He was outstanding in his final, collecting his first gold medal, and it won’t be his last.

“He has a big future in boxing of this I’m sure.

“At least three of the others could have gone our way, the bouts were that close, but it wasn’t to be.

“It was a fantastic two weeks’ boxing, which was run very efficiently by Boxing Scotland.

“All the boxers gave it 100 per cent, which left the coaches at Durie’s very happy, I was proud of every one of our boxers and I couldn’t ask for any more from them.”
