Scottish football: Why this could be a huge season for Arbroath

Dundee at Dens Park is a massive game for Arbroath tonight live on the telly but I think it is one where we can pick something up, and we’re very confident of doing so. Maybe Dundee will still be carrying a hangover from being relegated from the Premiership last season and we can maybe catch them cold.

They will be big favourites to go back up to the Premiership, though, so we know how tough a game it will be. We’ve yet to score and also yet to concede but there was enough in the performances at Ayr United and Inverness at home, where we had more than enough chances to win and were well on top, to suggest it hasn’t been the worst of starts to the season.

It was similar to the play-off semi-final game we lost to Inverness a few months earlier, as we did everything but score again. I think Inverness will be in the mix again this season for the play-offs and Ayr United are a vastly-improved team from last season.

So two draws in those games is not the worst. I’m on the case for a few late signings for the Championship push. I think we are looking quite strong for the season ahead and are quietly confident.

We finally landed young defender Mason Hancock, 19, from Aberdeen on a season-long loan after the move was called off earlier this summer. What a player that boy is and is going to be.

As always, the focus for Arbroath this season is staying up. However, if we achieve that target then the next target is the play-offs and, after that, who knows?

But we’re not getting carried away. We are just going to quietly go about our business and let the experts discuss who is going to win the Championship this season. One thing that I will say is that in every season I’ve been at Arbroath, I have improved the club.
