Schoolgirl, 11, diagnosed with 'rare disease' following routine dentist appointment

A schoolgirl was rushed to hospital following a routine dentist check up, where she was diagnosed with a 'rare disease.'

Millie Kelly, 11, first experienced pain in her jaw and a 'small' lump in her mouth, but soon the swelling began to get worse. Mum Nikki took her daughter to the dentist, where an x-ray showed that the pain wasn't being caused by a tooth pushing through - it was something else.

Millie was sent to Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool for further tests, which revealed a mass in her jaw. She was soon diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the bone, reports the Liverpool ECHO.

Six months on and medication is helping, but Millie is still under the care of Alder Hey and needs a full body MRI to ensure it is not showing anywhere else. But selfless Millie wanted to give back to the hospital and other sick children.

So at 2am on Saturday morning (June 24), Millie and her mum and dad Mike walked up Snowdon, in the wind and rain and raised over £1,000 for the hospital.

Mum Nikki said: "It was only a small lump at first but then as time went on it was getting bigger and we thought surely it can't be her tooth. When she had the x-ray we realised it wasn't. We took her straight the dentist because it had just swollen up and we were worried it couldn't been an infection but it was this rare disease instead.
