Scarlets 42-14 Edinburgh: West Walians turn on style to maintain unbeaten start to 2023
The Scarlets' unbeaten start to 2023 continued as they brushed aside Edinburgh to claim an emphatic bonus point victory. It has been a dark week for Welsh rugby with Warren Gatland's Six Nations squad threatening to strike ahead of next Saturday's England clash as a result of the protracted regional contract freeze. Many of Dwayne Peel's side are out of contract at the end of the season, and are unaware where they will be playing their rugby in a few months time. But the uncertainty isn't affecting their on field performances as they turned on the style to run Edinburgh ragged. The improvement in the Scarlets' attacking play since the appointment of former Wasps boss Lee Blackett as Dwayne Peel's assistant has been startling.
From the very outset the West Walians attempted to play the game at pace, with their intricate attacking moves finding space out wide.
They drew first blood after five minutes as they perfectly executed a set play straight from the training ground. The ball was spread wide from the proceeding scrum before finding Johnny McNicholl who released Ryan Conbeer on the outside.
Conbeer broke clear before turning inside and showing tremendous strength to touch down for a try with Sam Costelow converted from out wide.
The Scarlets were soon celebrating their second try as former All Blacks star Vaea Fifita picked off a loose pass from James Lang to run in unopposed from 70 metres out.
But Edinburgh hit back when Lang brushed aside Ioan Nicholas to allow the Scottish outfit to set up camp in the Scarlets 22.
They went through the phases with a series of pick and goes before tighthead prop Murray McCallum forced his way over from short range with Charlie Savala converting from the touchline.
It proved to be nothing more
