Saudi Tourism Authority turned the World Cup hydration break into a real-time marketing platform
RIYADH: The Saudi Tourism Authority transformed one of the World Cup’s most recognizable match-day moments into a real-time social activation, using the tournament’s three-minute hydration breaks as the inspiration for a live Instagram competition promoting travel experiences across Saudi.
Launched under the Saudi, Welcome to Arabia brand, The Real Hydration Break centered on a simple mechanic inspired by the duration of a World Cup hydration break. To enter, participants tagged the person they wanted to travel with and shared why they wanted to experience Saudi together. During each live activation, one participant was randomly selected and given three minutes to respond before the prize passed to another entrant.
Running from 11 to 19 July, the activation featured two live competitions tied to the World Cup. The first took place during the tournament’s semifinals, offering audiences the chance to win a luxury escape to The Red Sea. The second was held during the World Cup Final, where participants competed for a trip to AquArabia, the region’s largest water theme park.
The activation generated more than 3 million views, and received over 3,000 competition entries, demonstrating how a simple real-time mechanic built around a global cultural moment encouraged audiences to actively participate.
Beyond the numbers, the audience response became one of the activation’s most compelling outcomes. Rather than simply tagging someone to enter, participants shared the personal reasons they wanted to travel together. Couples described the experience as the honeymoon they had never taken.
