Sam Allardyce makes West Brom transfer claim involving West Ham
Former West Bromwich Albion boss Sam Allardyce has told Ladbrokes that David Moyes nipped in at the last minute to prevent him from signing Jesse Lingard from Manchester United.
The former Bolton Wanderers and Sunderland boss took over at the Black Country side mid-season and was tasked with keeping the Baggies in the Premier League as they sought to fight off the threat of relegation.
In order to achieve that goal Allardyce quickly set about using the January transfer window to his advantage as a bid was lodged to attempt to bring Lingard to the Hawthorns.
However the ex-England manager has now revealed that a deal fell through at the last minute for the attacking midfielder as Moyes and West Ham United came in at the last minute to seal a loan agreement for the player:
“The biggest loss for me at West Brom was Jesse Lingard – we should have got him in that January window.
“It was Moyesys’ fault that we didn’t get him. He was coming to The Hawthorns and then Moyesy popped up at the last minute and nabbed him.”
Lingard went on to score nine goals in 16 games for the Hammers whilst Albion were eventually relegated after finishing 19th in the top flight.
Allardyce has been out of work ever since leaving the club following their relegation.
The Verdict
This would have been a signing for the Baggies that could have made all the difference but at the same time everything is fine when its spoken about in hindsight.
Allardyce ultimately didn’t do enough to keep the club up and this seems like a bit of a poor excuse that he has just reeled off.
He didn’t live up to his reputation of keeping clubs up against the odds and he has arguably not been the same manager since the whole England debacle.
It will be interesting to see if
