Salford's Adelphi Lads Club site could be turned into flats

Plans to build flats on the former Adelphi Lads Club have been submitted to Salford council. Beluga Group and ForHousing have lodged an application to build an apartment complex on the land on Cannon Street, with a total of 63 flats which will be classed as affordable housing.

The building was partially demolished under a previous planning application in 2021, and in July 2023 permission was granted for a building with 100-affordable homes to the west of the site on Peru Street.

The new proposals include access to flats from North George Street, with all the planned apartments available at social rent levels. It is made up of 36 one-bedroom apartments and 27 with two bedrooms.

The former Adelphi Lads Club site is a ten-minute walk to Chapel Street where potential future residents can access bus and railway public transport services. If approved, the building design would be three to six storeys in height, with a total of eight car parking spaces, and a place for parking bicycles.

The club was formed in 1888, pre-dating Salford Lads Club which was founded in 1903. Adelphi later moved to Cannon Street around 1921, running sports teams and activities including boxing and football.

But previous planning documents stated that the building was 'not deemed fit for repair' after suffering fire damage in 2010. Despite closing its doors, a beer garden was set up on the site which was still used for private events.
