Salford City sack manager Gary Bowyer after missing out on League Two play-offs

Salford City are looking for a fourth manager in less than two years after the Class of 92-owned club sacked Gary Bowyer on Tuesday.

Club officials held a meeting on Tuesday morning and decided to terminate the contract of Bowyer and his assistant manager Billy Barr following a disappointing end to the season.

The Ammies had nudged themselves into League Two play-off contention but won just one of their final five fixtures to finish 10th, seven points shy of the top seven.

Salford have now sacked Graham Alexander, Richie Wellens and Bowyer since October 2020 and continue to find the task of escaping the fourth tier a difficult one.

The club were promoted into the Football League for the first time after winning the National League play-offs in 2019, but their meteoric rise has stalled since then and they earning a reputation for a hiring and firing culture.

Alexander delivered promotion to the Football League but was sacked in October 2020, early in the club's second season in League Two.

Wellens lasted just four months and was given his marching orders a week after winning the EFL Trophy at Wembley. Bowyer has last 14 months, having initially been appointed as caretaker last March, but his failure to deliver the promotion the owners are desperate to achieve has cost him his job.

Gary Neville is seen as the most hands-on among the club's owners and he's previously been critical of clubs that don't give managers enough time to achieve success.

He has previously admitted he should never have sacked Alexander, but is now likely to come in for more criticism for handing Bowyer his P45.
