Salah, De Bruyne, no Van Dijk: Premier League's 'true' Team of the Season based on stats

The 2021/22 Premier League season came to an end in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon.

Manchester City pipped Liverpool to top spot after producing an incredible late comeback against Aston Villa.

Tottenham secured the fourth and final Champions League berth as they managed to finish two points above fierce rivals, Arsenal.

While Leeds secured survival at the expense of Burnley, who joined Watford and Norwich in relegation to the Championship.

But who made it into the best performing XI of the season?

SofaScore have published their Premier League Team of the Season using stats from this season. View it below…

Goalkeeper: Alisson Becker – 7.11

Alisson won the Golden Glove after keeping 20 clean sheets in the Premier League with Liverpool.

RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold – 7.65

Alexander-Arnold was the Premier League’s second highest-rated player in 2021/22.

CB: Joel Matip – 7.35

Virgil van Dijk often gets all the plaudits but Matip has been sensational for the Reds this season. Injuries have plagued him in the past but he’s put those struggles behind him in 2021/22.

CB: Thiago Silva – 7.32

Van Dijk (average rating: 7.26) is a major omission from the XI, with Silva taking his place instead. Silva, now 37, remains one of the world’s best defenders.

LB: Andy Robertson – 7.36

Robertson makes the side in front of City ace, Joao Cancelo. The Scot recorded 14 goal contributions in the Premier League in 2021/22 (three goals, 11 assists).

CDM: Rodri – 7.38

While superb in defence, Rodri also offers a lot going forward. He scored seven Premier League goals in 2021/22, including the equaliser against Aston Villa on the final day.

RM: Mohamed Salah – 7.39

Salah scored 24 times and recorded 13 assists in the Premier League this season.
