Saint-Maximin savages Newcastle signings after making surprise Liverpool winger declaration

Allan Saint-Maximin has thrown shade at the Newcastle forwards he plays with, and insisted he has zero reason to envy Liverpool ace Sadio Mane.

The lively Frenchman, 25, remains Newcastle’s most dangerous attacking threat most weeks. Saint-Maximin has dazzled the St. James’ Park crowds with his pace, trickery and mesmeric dribbling ability.

However, despite his mercurial talents, end product in the stats columns remains in desperately short supply.

Indeed, Saint-Maximin has just five goals and four assists to his name in 32 league matches this year.

While that may seem low, it is actually his highest goals return since joining the Magpies in 2019.

Saint-Maximin notched just three goals in each of his two previous seasons with Newcastle. Yet despite the lowly numbers, it’d be unwise to conclude Saint-Maximin isn’t a more than effective attacker.

The main centre-forward he has operated alongside at Newcastle is Callum Wilson. His injury this season has seen Chris Wood handed regular starts following his January arrival from Burnley. However, the New Zealander has just two goals in 15 outings thus far.

That has led to Saint-Maximin being deployed as a false nine on occasion. And speaking to French outlet SoFoot, the forward surprisingly took a swipe at his fellow attackers.

In doing so, Saint-Maximin suggested he has “nothing to envy” about Sadio Mane. That was seemingly in reference to his belief he’d be putting up comparable numbers to the Senegalese if he were playing alongside better players.

“Those who have played with me know very well that in terms of pure quality, I have nothing to envy to Sadio Mané,” said Saint-Maximin.
