Ryan opts to stay at Wexford amid Waterford interest

Waterford FC are still on the lookout for a new manager after Wexford boss Ian Ryan opted to reject their interest in his services and stay at Ferrycarrig Park.

The Blues have been searching for a new boss since parting company with Ian Morris.

Waterford had been expected to challenge for automatic promotion this campaign, with Morris' tenure lasting just four months due to poor results.

Interim management have led the Blues to a revival but they remain keen on appointing a successor.

Ryan has been in charge of Wexford for a year. Having improved with the squad with clever loan signings and experienced former Premier Division players, they are in contention for a play-off spot this campaign.

The 34-year-old began his senior management career as assistant at UCD before joining Wexford.

He said he was "flattered" by suitors but remains committed to trying to take Wexford to the top flight.

Ryan stated: "While flattered by the interest, I am enjoying my time at Wexford and enjoy the full support from everyone at the club, and I am determined to reward their faith in me by seeing this project through to its conclusion."

A Wexford statement added: "Wexford FC are delighted to confirm that despite media speculation and interest from another club, manager Ian Ryan has reaffirmed his commitment to the club.

"Wexford gave Ian his first League of Ireland team manager role in May 2021 and he is contracted to the club until the end of the 2023 season.

"Having taken us from the bottom of the table we are now genuine play-off contenders with a strong squad built and developed by Ian.
