Ryan Gravenberch can give Manchester United what Erik ten Hag is looking for

With just over a week to go until the summer transfer window closes, Manchester United face a race against time to try and fix a major problem.

United, following a forgettable 2021/22 campaign, rebuilt their midfield last season with the signings of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro. The duo arrived during last summer's transfer window and both made almost immediate impacts, joining forces with Bruno Fernandes in the engine room.

After several seasons of 'McFred' anchoring the midfield prior to their arrivals, United's supporters were confident that their midfield troubles of yesteryear were firmly in the past. At the same time, however, they recognised that their midfield needed an injection of freshness and energy this summer.

After it became clear that moves for Jude Bellingham and Frenkie de Jong, who was a leading target last summer, were out of the question, the Reds earmarked Mason Mount as an attainable target. United, following several weeks of negotiations, drafted him in in early-July for a fee that could rise to £60million.

Though he was not the most glittering midfield signing that United could have made, a deeper dive into his underlying numbers made you understand why Erik ten Hag had identified him as the ideal candidate to energise the midfield. Eriksen, despite an excellent first campaign at Old Trafford, tired towards the end of last term, meaning it was clear that United had to inject fresh legs into that area of the team.
