Ryan Garcia's goal is 'to become world champion this year', says promoter Oscar De La Hoya

Ryan Garcia‘s goal is ‘to become world champion this year’, boxing promoter Oscar De La Hoya has claimed.

Garcia, 23, will begin his comeback trail on his way back to the top of the sport against Emmanuel Tagoe.

The former WBC interim lightweight champion has not fought since his knockout victory over Luke Campbell in January 2021.

But according to De La Hoya, his goal is to become the real thing by the end of the year.

De La Hoya told DAZN: “The vision is to become world champion this year.

“That’s the bottom line. Like you have Kambosos fighting Haney, which I believe was confirmed. That’s going to be a great fight.

“And so, we’re going to look at the winner very carefully, and see what happens.

“But it’s a great fight, Kambosos-Haney. Who knows, maybe the winner?

“Or maybe we go a different route. Maybe we start negotiations with Tank Davis you know. I’m waiting for his promoter Al Haymon to give me a call and let’s make that fight happen.

“Why not? We’re here. We’re ready.

“But first thing is first April 9.”

If Garcia wins, he is likely to land a big-name fight such as Gervonta Davis, Devin Haney and George Kambosos Jr.

De La Hoya insisted, however, that this doesn’t mean that he is completely taking his eye off the ball when it comes to his opponent as he is well aware of the fact that he cannot to slip up.

Tagoe last fought in November 2020 and has not lost since losing on his debut over 15 years ago.

He carries a record of 32 wins and 1 loss with 15 of his victories coming by way of knockout.

De La Hoya added: “He’s fighting a guy who has nothing to lose.

“I think Ryan needs to come out and make a point but do it smart and careful.

“Ryan knows what he is doing. He’s a professional. He’s been there before
