Ruud van Nistelrooy to Rangers swirl may have answer as love affair endures despite Man Utd sliding doors moment

Rangers may already have a clue over potentially replacing under-fire boss Philippe Clement with Ruud van Nistelrooy following his Manchester United exit.

Following the arrival of Ruben Amorim from Sporting, the Old Trafford assistant boss has been shown the door along after leading the club to a four game unbeaten run following the departure of Erik ten Hag. After signing off his spell in United dugout with a 3-0 win over Leicester, the former PSV Eindhoven boss has been backed to make a quick-fire return to management by former teammate Rio Ferdinand with the rumour mill ramping up over a switch to the Scottish Premiership.

He said: "His audition couldn't have gone any better and I think, knowing him, there was a steely determination underneath that said, 'I'm going to put myself in the best position, either to stay at the club in some capacity or someone else is going to say we need you as a manager'. "Rangers are a great club and I have experienced the atmosphere at Ibrox myself. They made it to the Europa League Final, of course, so they clearly have a good squad."

Belgian boss Clement appeared to ease the mounting pressure he faced heading into the international break with back-to-back league wins over St Mirren and Hearts either side of a battling for a Europa League point
