Russian, German cross-country skiers accused of using banned wax lubricant at Winter Olympics

An athlete has suggested those making bombshell allegations of cheating at the Winter Olympics should “check in my undies” for evidence.

The claims have emerged against Russian and German competitors in cross-country skiing events, with officials from the latter nation suggesting the allegations have arisen out of jealousy over its success in Beijing.

The allegations are that the countries have used fluorinated wax on athletes’ skis as lubricant.

Fluorinated waxes, which contain C8 fluoropolymers, have been banned by the International Ski Federation, which has cited environmental and health impacts for the decision.

A report from Finnish publication Iltalehti emerged after Germany won silver in the women’s 4x5km relay on Saturday, February 12, and gold in the women’s team sprint classic on Wednesday at the Zhangjiakou National Cross-Country Skiing Centre.

The publication cited an anonymous “insider” who claimed “the banned fluoride C8 was used, at least in the 4x5 km relay on Saturday, possibly also in the team sprint on Wednesday”.

German team coach Andreas Schlutter said that was untrue and suggested the claims may have been sparked by disappointment by rival nation Finland.

“We certainly do not use C8 fluorine, as we no longer bring it with us,” he told Norwegian news outlet Dagbladet.

“What they’re writing is a lie.

“The Finns must be disappointed over losing out on medals in the relay.”

German Ski Association board member Stefan Schwarzbach backed up Schlutter’s denial, labelling the allegations “outrageous”.
