Russian figure skater Alexandra Trusova blows up after claiming silver in Winter Olympics women’s event

As the world watched 15-year-old Kamila Valieva fall apart while finishing out of the medals in the Winter Olympics women’s figure skating, another Russian took the spotlight for her off-the-ice behaviour.

Alexandra Trusova decried her silver medal and vowed to quit the sport after her performance in the free skate in Beijing on Thursday night wasn’t enough to see her top the podium.

Trusova won the free skate section with a score of 177.13, thanks to a routine in which she became the first woman to do five quadruple jumps.

But after her short program was scored 74.60 two days earlier, her total from the two skates fell 4.22 points short of countrywoman Anna Shcherbakova, who claimed gold.

Shcherbakova went into the free skate in second place after her short program scored 80.20.

In an angry and tearful tirade captured by Olympic broadcasters, the 17-year-old Trusova took aim at coach Eteri Tutberidze and other Russian officials.

“Everyone has a gold medal! Everyone has! Only I don’t!” a tearful Trusova said, according to a translation verified by NBC.

“I hate figure skating! I hate! I will never step on the ice again! Never!”

She pushed Tutberidze off as the mentor attempted to give her a consoling embrace.

The skater later said at the post-event press conference: “I’m not happy with the result ... There is no happiness.”

But she also confirmed “only emotions” prompted her to talk of leaving the sport.

In a night of high drama, Trusova’s 15-year-old teammate Valieva was inconsolable in the kiss-and-cry area.
