Ruben Dias issues Champions League warning to Man City despite Sporting Lisbon demolition

Ruben Dias insists Manchester City still have a job to do in their Champions League tie against Sporting Lisbon – despite taking a commanding lead into the second leg.

City all-but secured their place in the quarter-finals of the competition, and took another big step towards ending their long wait for a first European crown as they thrashed Sporting 5-0 in Portugal.

A Bernardo Silva double, plus goals from Riyad Mahrez and Phil Foden, practically had things sewn up before half-time as the visitors took a commanding lead into the break.

And Raheem Sterling added the gloss to the result with a sumptuous finish to make it 5-0, and all-but send City through.

Sporting will head to the Etihad for the second leg in three weeks’ time, although at this stage it looks set to be a procession after City’s demolition job in the first leg.

Dias though, who would have enjoyed the victory more than most having previously been a Benfica player, insists there is still work to do his side before they can think about the quarter-finals.

"We expected a difficult game and that's what happened,” Dias said.

“The result is very positive for us, but it doesn't take away the difficulty that Sporting made us feel.

“It's not easy to play with Sporting, there are still 90 minutes to play, and our concentration has to be the same.

"We were happy and managed to materialize the occasions we created. We scored two or three goals early and the game changed.

“But we cannot feel that it has become easy. The goals brought tranquility, but Sporting showed that they have a lot of quality."
