Ruaidhrí Higgins: We should have gone for the jugular against Bohemians

Even though he was delighted with the 1-0 win over Bohemians, Derry City manager Ruaidhrí Higgins felt his side should have made their first-half dominance pay when up against ten men for most of the half.

Grant Horton was shown a straight red card for a foul on Michael Duffy as he went through on goal on 14 minutes.

Three minutes later, former Bohemians player Ryan Graydon grabbed the only of the game. The result sees the Gypsies drop to third in the Premier Division table, with Derry now second on goal difference, two points adrift of Shamrock Rovers at the summit.

Speaking to reporters after the Dalymount Park clash, Higgins praised his team, saying that "in the first half we were absolutely brilliant".

He felt though that they should have had more on the scoreboard in the opening 45 minutes.

"We started the game really well, dominated the ball and played some good stuff. To be honest we made life a bit harder for ourselves. When we smelt blood in the first half, we should have went for the second and a third.

"Ultimately with the home team, the crowd get up and they get a bit of hope. Shane McEleney made a brilliant defensive header in injury time, but given our first-half performance and the domination we had in the first half we deserved to win the game."

On not making more of the numerical advantage, Higgins added: "It's a habit we need to get out of; we had them penned in 11 v 11, we should have smelt blood and gone for the jugular to make the second half more comfortable for ourselves.

"We had control, we've come to Dalymount Park and won 1-0 - that's back-to-back 1-0 wins away from home - we'll take it."
