Royal AM upset Cape Town City in Nedbank Cup

Royal AM scored two goals in quick succession as they rallied to beat Cape Town City 2-1 in a Nedbank Cup Round of 32 tie at Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium on Saturday.

The Citizens claimed an early lead through Khanyisa Mayo before a Relebogile Mokhuoane own goal levelled matters in the 50th minute. And the comeback was completed four minutes later as Lantshene Phalane slotted a long-range free-kick into the top corner.

The first chance of note arrived after nine minutes of play as Royal AM's Victor Letsoalo sent an attempted bicycle kick wide of the upright after being teed up Zukile Mkhize's hanging cross.

But it was the Citizens who claimed the lead just one minute later, with Khanyisa Mayo trapping Thami Mkhize's low cross in the danger area before rifling the ball into the roof of the net.

They had a chance to add a second goal five minutes later but Craig Martin was unable to capitalise, sending a headed effort well wide of the target.

Royal AM were left cursing their luck a few minutes later as Taariq Fielies came to his side's rescue with last-ditch clearance after Thabo Matlaba beat goalkeeper Hugo Marques with a low, curling effort.

The two sides continued to trade blows as Mduduzi Mdantsane headed wide for the Citizens while at the opposite end of the pitch, Thato Lingwati and Tebogo Potsane went close to levelling matters with their respective attempts on goal.

Royal AM finally got the breakthrough they were looking for five minutes after the restart, though, as Relebogile Mokhuoane put the ball into his own net while attempting to clear Kabelo Mahlasela's pass.

Buoyed by the equaliser, Royal AM redoubled their efforts and it didn't take long to claim the lead as added a second goal in the 54th minute.
