Roshane Thomas shares West Ham reveal as Moyes is given the ‘option’ to sign World Cup winner

The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas has shared some fresh West Ham United transfer news involving current loanee Alphonse Areola.

The Frenchman, who was a part of the World Cup-winning squad in 2018, joined the Hammers on loan last summer. Whilst the loan deal was announced as a single year, the east London club further stated that they have the option of making the deal permanent at the end of the season.

However, the Paris Saint-Germain ‘keeper has struggled for game-time with the Irons, remaining as Lukasz Fabianski’s understudy throughout the course of the Premier League campaign, having made just one appearance in the division this term.

Instead, the 6 foot 5 ‘keeper took the starting spot in the Hammers’ Europa League campaign, where he has put in a number of stunning performances, most recently in West Ham’s sensational 2-0 win over Sevilla last Thursday.

Whilst some Irons fans may have thought that the club might be signing Areola at the end of the season for a reported £11m, some interesting news has emerged which may change this.

Taking to Twitter as he shared a corresponding article from The Athletic‘s David Ornstein, he stated: “EXCL: West Ham have the option to re-sign Alphonse Areola on loan for next season. #WHUFC”

Keeping Areola in east London on loan for another season would make perfect sense for West Ham. This would free up funds which David Moyes can spend elsewhere, particularly in areas where additions are badly needed, primarily at centre-back and up front.

Whilst the Frenchman has been a fine understudy to Fabianski, he is seven years younger than the Hammers’ number one. Therefore, another loan deal before making the deal permanent should prove to be shrewd business for West Ham in the long-term,
