Cristiano Ronaldo has been charged with violent conduct by the FA after an investigation into an incident in which the Manchester United forward appeared to intentionally knock a phone out of the hand of a fan after a 1-0 loss to Everton last April. "It is alleged that the forward's conduct after the final whistle was improper and/or violent," the FA said in a statement that cited a breach of FA Rule E3.

The 37-year-old Portugal icon was previously cautioned by police last month. United released a statement in response to the charge later on Friday. "We note the FA announcement in relation to Cristiano Ronaldo," the statement read. "We will be supporting the player in response to the charge." Ronaldo is currently on international duty with Portugal.

United, fifth in the league on 12 points, returns to league play on Oct. 2 with a trip to the Etihad to take on second-place Manchester City in the first Manchester derby of the season.
