Rogue cameraman causes chaos in the World Champs men’s steeplechase

We can all agree steeplechasers have a lot to deal with in their races; what with numerous water pits and 36-inch-high barriers to surmount over 3,000m there’s plenty to think about. But a cameraman at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon clearly thought that wasn’t enough, as he made himself an additional obstacle in the men’s steeplechase final on Monday.

The cameraman was busy filming another event – the women’s triple jump final – and in doing so had wandered onto the track, unaware that 15 runners in a bunch were about to round the corner and see him blocking their path.

As the cameraman was focused on his job, he remained still as the runners funnelled either side of him. Miraculously, no one tripped or stumbled when presented with the unexpected sight and, as the incident occurred in the first lap, it didn’t have a significant effect on any tactical moves.

‘I was a little worried that he was going to dart one way or another, right at the last second,’ the US’s Evan Jager told the New York Times, ‘but thankfully he didn’t realise we were there until we all passed him.’
