Roglic poised to win Giro after decisive time-trial victory

Primoz Roglic is poised to win his first Giro d'Italia title after snatching the overall lead from Geraint Thomas with victory in the 18.6km individual time trial on Saturday, with Eddie Dunbar slipping to seventh overall.

Jumbo-Visma rider Roglic overcame a mechanical issue to clock the best time of 44 minutes and 49 seconds in the penultimate 20th stage as Thomas faded in the final metres, finishing 40 seconds behind.

Tomorrow's final stage in Rome is effectively a ceremonial affair.

Corkman Eddie Dunbar finished 19th in the time trial from Tarvisio to Monte Lussari.

Dunbar, riding for Team Jayco AlUla, began the day in fifth overall and posted a time of 47 26", just over three minutes down on the blistering time put in by Roglic.

Nonetheless, a top-ten finish on the GC represents a superb showing by Dunbar who will take enormous encouragement from his displays.

Meanwhile Ben Healy’s time of 48’ 25" was good enough for 26th overall. Healy is third in the King of the Mountains standings on 164 points, behind Derek Gee [Israel-Premier Tech, 200] and Thibaut Pinot [Groupama-FDJ, 237].

He too has a had a massively impressive Giro, the 22-year-old enhancing his reputation as a rising star.
