Roger Federer retirement: Slow-motion footage of tennis legend hitting one-of-a-kind shot
Roger Federer still had something surprising in his locker despite stepping out onto court for the last time.
Federer treated fans at the Laver Cup to something they had never seen before when he managed to squeeze a forehand through the net.
At 1-1 in the first set, Federer lunged in and attempted to send a forehand down the line. However, dispute mishitting the ball, it ended up bouncing past opponents Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock for the winner.
Team Europe were quick to have their say on what had happened.
“It was not meant to be, but my eye was still good!” Federer said to his teammates. I saw that it went through – or it must have!
Rafael Nadal added: “I didn’t see it. But the rule should be that if the balls go there then you win the point. For sure!”
Thankfully for Federer’s opponents, the officials used modern technology to determine what had happened. Relying on a replay on the big screen, it showed that the ball went through a tiny gap where the net chord attached to the post.
Federer’s career has been one of firsts, and he did it again tonight, by somehow hitting the ball between the net and the actual net post
