Roger Federer: Rafa Nadal cries during his emotional retirement

Roger Federer has officially retired from tennis.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion played the final match of his career in a doubles match with Rafael Nadal at the Laver Cup.

Despite not having played competitively for more than a year, Federer and Nadal – affectionately nicknamed ‘Fedal’ – almost beat American duo Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe.

However, the pair playing for Europe against the rest of the world eventually lost 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 11-9, even though they had a match point at 9-8 in the decider.

Regardless of the final result of his career, Federer will go down as one of the greatest players in the sport’s history.

It was an emotional occasion inside the 17,500-capacity O2 Arena in London as Federer addressed the crowd.

“It’s been a wonderful day. I’m happy, not sad. It feels great to be here. I’m happy I made it through,” he said.

“It’s been the perfect journey. I’d do it all again.

“Everyone’s here, the boys and girls. My wife has been so supportive. She could have stopped me a long, long time ago but she didn’t.

“She kept me going and allowed me to play, so it’s amazing – thank you.

“Being with the guys and having family and friends, I didn’t feel the stress so much even if I felt something would go during the match.

“I am so glad I made it through and the match was great. I couldn’t be happier.”

There was barely a dry eye on the house.

And that includes from rival Rafa Nadal.

During a tribute to Federer, Ellie Goulding sung while a montage of the Swiss’ career was shown in the area. The cameras panned to Federer and Nadal, who were both in tears.
