Riyadh-hosted world weightlifting championship concludes with record participation

RIYADH: The Riyadh-hosted World Weightlifting Championship concluded on Sunday with more than 2,500 male and female athletes representing over 170 countries taking part in the event, a new record for the tournament.

Saudi assistant minister of sport and Secretary-General of the Arab National Olympic Committee, Abdulaziz Al-Anzi, crowned the competition winners with their medals during a ceremony to mark the end of the championship.

In the combined medal table, China came out on top with 20 golds among their total haul of 33 medals.

Thailand, with five golds out of a total of nine medals, pipped Egypt — also with five golds out of their seven-medal finish — to second in the table.

In the team ranking on the men’s side of the tournament, Armenia came out on top with 522 points, ahead of China (492) and Iran (458).

Colombia won on the women’s side with 619 points, ahead of the US (559) and China (554).
