Rivers United to play USM Algiers in Confederation Cup quarterfinals

Nigeria’s remaining team in the 2023/24 Confederation of African Football (CAF) inter-club competitions, Rivers United, was yesterday drawn against defending champions, USM Algiers of Algeria, in the quarterfinals of the championship.

Rivers United defeated Dreams FC of Ghana in their last group game to finish second behind the Ghanaians in the Group C of the competition and qualify for the last eight of the event.

In the draw held in Cairo, Egypt, yesterday, Rivers United was drawn to host USM Algiers in the first leg of quarterfinals in Port Harcourt on April 21, while the second leg will hold in Algiers on April 28.

In other pairings, Modern Future will battle Zamalek in an all-Egyptian quarterfinal, while Abu Salim of Libya will clash with Morocco’s Renaissance Berkane, just as Stade Malien will host Dreams FC of Ghana.

Should Rivers United survive USM Algiers, they will meet the winner of the quarterfinal clash between Abu Salim and RS Berkane in the semifinals.

The winner of the Modern Future versus Zamalek tie will battle with either Stade Malien or Dreams FC in the semifinal on April 21 (first leg) and April 28 (second leg) in the semifinal.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns were drawn against Young Africans of Tanzania in the CAF Champions League quarterfinals, just as Simba SC, also of Tanzania, will battle with Egyptian giants, Al Ahly.

DR Congos’ TP Mazembe were pitted against Atletico Petroloes of Angola, while Esperance of Tunisia will clash with Asec Mimosas of Cote d’Ivoire.

If Sundowns beat Young Africans they will face the winners of the other last eight match between Esperance of Tunisia or Asec Mimosas of Cote d’Ivoire in the semifinals. And should TP Mazembe win their tie with Atletico
