Rio Ferdinand picks Harry Maguire as England's only centre-back in World Cup starting XI

Rio Ferdinand would pick Harry Maguire as the only recognised centre-back in England's starting line-up for the World Cup in Qatar.

During his Vibe with Five Podcast, the ex-Manchester United man was asked to name his preferred Three Lions line-up for their first match at the winter World Cup. The football showcase will begin on Monday, November 21 with the final taking place on Sunday, December 18.

Ferdinand revealed that he would favour a three at the back formation which served England well four years ago in Russia when they reached the semi finals. However his choice of personnel left his fellow panelists in stitches.

He explained: "I’m gonna go three at the back as I think that’s our best chance. Maguire on the left, Kyle Walker central and Reece James on the right.

"Trent [Alexander-Arnold] at right wing-back and [Luke] Shaw left wing-back. I’m gonna go Declan [Rice] and [Jude] Bellingham (in midfield).

"Foden in the hole and then two strikers [Raheem] Sterling and [Harry] Kane." Ferdinand's choice of Maguire in the defence will raise eyebrows with a certain section of the England fanbase.

Maguire was booed at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday night as the Three Lions beat Ivory Coast 3-0 in a World Cup warm up match. After the final whistle, Gareth Southgate called the reception he received 'an absolute joke'.

Rice and Kane were among his teammates who also criticised the section of supporters booing the United captain. Maguire has been targeted online for his performances at Old Trafford and was ironically cheered against Atletico Madrid when substituted in the latter stages of the Champions League tie.
