Rio Ferdinand jokes why Man City star Jack Grealish was targeted by Atletico Madrid players

Rio Ferdinand has explained his thinking behind why Manchester City's Jack Grealish was targeted by Atletico Madrid players on Wednesday night.

The Champions League tie descended into chaos in the closing stages as Felipe was sent off for kicking out at Phil Foden. Stefan Savic appeared to lose his head during a resulting scuffle as he grabbed the hair of Grealish before attempting to headbutt Raheem Sterling.

A fight then began in the tunnel at full-time with Savic and Grealish having to be separated by players and officials. UEFA are currently waiting for the referee's report before deciding if any further action will be taken against either man.

Speaking on BT Sport after the final whistle, Ferdinand explained why Grealish had been targeted during the match. He said: "He has been on the pitch maybe 10 minutes over the two legs.

"It must have been the Gucci deal he got, Savic ain't happy with that. Maybe it was something to do with his ( Grealish's ) hair length, I don't know what's wrong.

"Maybe it is the jealousy, the £100million price tag. I don't know, it is weird, either Jack has said something that we haven't seen or they just don't like the look of him."
