Richard Arnold is already doing things differently to Ed Woodward at Manchester United

The first investors' call at Manchester United under the charge of Richard Arnold should probably have begun like your average self-help group. "Okay, John, why don't you tell us a bit about yourself and why you're here?"

There was a cast of new voices on the line and it was a clear change in policy from the days of Ed Woodward. It might look like a minor detail but Arnold's collegiate approach is a clear hint as to how he intends to run the business of Manchester United Football Club.

Whereas previously Woodward would dominate the calls, with some insight from Arnold and chief financial officer Cliff Baty, this time there was half-a-dozen on the call sheet going through their various responsibilities to the investors on the other end of the line.

Football topics used to be addressed by Woodward, although that usually amounted to a couple of lines or so. This time John Murtough was on hand to give a more complete overview of matters to the core element of the club, which is the football after all, rather than the cash cow.

Also present and speaking were Collette Roche (chief operating officer), Victoria Timpson (CEO of alliances and partnerships) and Phil Lynch (CEO of digital products and experiences - and the man behind those famous fan sentiment graphs), as well as Arnold and Baty.

"You will have noticed we have added a few new speakers to our normal line-up. Earlier this month we introduced a new leadership structure and you will hear directly from some of the members of our executive leadership team," Arnold told those on the call.
