Rhys McClenaghan misses out on European Championships final spot

Rhys McClenaghan has missed out on a place in the men's pommel horse final at the European Championships in Munich.

The 23-year-old Down man, who won gold at this event in 2018, world bronze the following year and Commonwealth silver last month, scored 14.2 for his routine and finished ninth, with only the top eight qualifying.

McClenaghan retains a slim chance of competing on first reserve but he took to Twitter to say "Same mistakes today again. Time to reassess to get back to consistent world class gymnastics."

Commonwealth champion Joe Fraser was the top qualifier with 14.6 and the Englishman also won gold by taking the all-round competition on a score of 85.565.

Eamon Montgomery was 69th in the floor section, scoring 12.833.

Dominick Cunningham was Ireland's highest placed all-rounder, coming in 25th of the 74 competitors in 79.53.

Daniel Fox finished 48th (76.231) and Ewan McAteer 55th (74.998).

Great Britain also led the qualifiers for the team final as Ireland (top five scores) finished 19th out of 26 nations.

A top-13 finish would have guaranteed a place in the World Championships in Liverpool later this year.
