Rhasidat Adeleke a doubt for 400m relay at World Championships

The women's 400m relay team will be hoping to replicate last year's European Championships final qualification when they line up in the World semis on Saturday, but there is growing doubt that Rhasidat Adeleke will be one of the quartet.

The Tallaght sensation finished fourth in the 400m final in Budapest on Wednesday night and would be expected to anchor the Irish team, however a long season may be catching up on the 20-year-old.

Fourth in the individual final in a time of 50.13 seconds, Adeleke looked spent when she crossed the line half a second behind third-placed Sada Williams of Barbados.

That was her third race in four days, following a gruelling American collegiate season, which saw her crowned NCAA 400m champion in June.

RTÉ Sport understands a medical decision may be made to spare her the rigours of the relay competition, in an effort to ensure she is in her best physical condition for an Olympic year in 2024.

Adeleke made the decision to turn pro following her NCAA success, and while her first few months as a professional have not gone as smoothly as hoped, this may be partly explained by an MRI for an unspecified issue in the last few weeks.

The 400m relay team is expected to be named later today.
