Rewriting history: Verstappen can match - and surpass - Vettel's legacy at Red Bull

Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing have been on quite a roll in 2022. Having overcome their troubling start to the year, the team has managed to win the last five races, with the wins shared between Verstappen taking four and teammate Sergio Perez the one in Monaco. Before that, Verstappen mustered one victory from the season's opening three races.

It has meant that the Dutchman now comfortably leads the 2022 Formula 1 Drivers' championship on 150 points, followed by Perez (129) and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc stuck on 116 after his pointless run in Baku.

For Verstappen, he is on his way to becoming Red Bull's most successful driver yet. Though he still has a way to go to match Sebastian Vettel's antics at the team, he is on his way to matching the German driver.

That was a good race!! ????We had incredible pace today ?? To have another maximum team score makes it a really good day for us @redbullracing ??It was a challenging weekend for us here in Baku, so to win this one feels absolutely great ??#KeepPushing #AzerbaijanGP pic.twitter.com/YBPzflheJ0

The stats are stacking up

Verstappen made his F1 debut in 2015, racing for the Toro Rosso (now AlphaTauri) team. But his fortunes changed just a few races into the 2016 season when he was called up to the Red Bull team. In his first outing for the team, the Spanish Grand Prix, he took a victory that would catapult him into F1 stardom.

In the 126 Grands Prix that he raced for Red Bull, Verstappen won 25 races. Adding the 23 races for Toro Rosso, the driver has a winning percentage of 16.78% for his career so far.
