Reuben Smith's double fracture at National BMX Championships in Birmingham

Reuben Smith suffered a double fracture in his collarbone after a spectacular crash at the National BMX Championships in Birmingham.

Smith had won his opening moto race last Sunday, setting the fastest lap in the 15-year-old category, and was leading the second when a rival rider lost balance and caused the Strood youngster to somersault over his handlebars.

Medics cut through his race gear and he was taken to hospital for an X-ray and patching up.

BMX isn’t for the faint-hearted and a second broken collarbone may have put some people off but not Smith.

He continued to watch the finals from hospital and celebrated when the national standings were published, showing an improved ranking from 12th to eighth.

He’s hoping to be fit for the national stage of the British BMX Championships in two weeks’ time.

Earlier in the Birmingham meeting, a broken start gate delayed Saturday's action.

Racing continued until 10pm, with Smith winning the B final after missing out on the A final by one place.
