Residents suddenly woken in early hours of morning as houses 'shake' in south Manchester

Residents in south Manchester were suddenly woken in the early hours of Wednesday morning (August 9) as houses 'shook'.

A number of people took to social media to share that a loud noise, heard over Didsbury, Fallowfield and Withington, at around 12.45am, had woken them up, with others saying their windows and homes were left 'shaking.'

It was later confirmed the reason for the noisy disturbance was a Royal Air Force Chinook Helicopter flying at just 3,000 feet overhead. The flight path showed how the aircraft travelled over Didsbury, towards the city centre and across to Old Trafford.

Elsewhere in Manchester, a Royal Air Force Chinook also flew over Bury and Failsworth, heading southwards towards Stockport, at around 3.45am.

Chinook helicopters have been used by the UK armed forces since the 1980s and are used for heavy-lifting, troop transportation and visiting dignitaries by the UK armed forces.

The noise of the helicopter quickly startled people living across south Manchester who took to social media. It later flew over Salford, Radcliffe before heading towards Lancashire.

@zxebruce posted: "It went right over our heads, the windows were shaking we thought it was a proper loud engine."

@MUnitedGirl tweeted: "Everyone being woken up thinking it’s judgment day - that bloody Chinook was loud! Sleep gone" and @nickypatterson0 wrote: "I thought my washing machine had gone rogue! what a racket!"

@Traumahawk007 said: "B**ger made me jump out of bed too," as @AndrewStuart tweeted: "I thought the house was shaking… turns out there’s actually a Chinook at 3,000ft over Manchester at 12:45am"
