Report: Semmens could now make last gasp bid to sign ‘world class’ international for Southampton

As per a report in The Mirror’s print edition (28.01.21, pg. 58, via The 72), some transfer news has come out of Southampton as the club could now make a last gasp bid to sign West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

Over this last week of the transfer window, the Saints have been tipped with late moves through reliable sources in the press as they aim to back manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano lifted the lid on Southampton’s willingness to table a £25 million bid to sign loanee Armando Broja on a permanent deal from Chelsea (Twitter).

Football.london correspondent Adam Newson also claimed that the south coast side, and by extension their transfer chief Martin Semmens, are attempting to sign another Blues sensation in midfielder Tino Anjorin (Twitter).

Now, with more news emerging on Southampton’s end-of-window transfer plans, The Mirror have an update involving England international Johnstone.

As per their information, via The 72, Hasenhuttl’s side ‘could make a last minute move’ to sign the 28-year-old this month with his Baggies contract runs out at the end of 2021/2022.

West Brom are set to lose the shot-stopper as a free agent in the summer as things stand, with January coming as one last chance to potentially make a small profit off his sale.

The Championship side’s manager, Valerien Ismael, confirmed that he axed Johnstone from his last squad to face Preston North End – revealing it was due to a behind-the-scenes ‘issue’.

After this internal development, The Mirror claim Southampton, West Ham and Spurs have been put on alert and could bid before the deadline.
