Report: Gerrard now considering getting rid of £22.5m-rated Villa favourite after Spurs shocker

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard is considering the future of Ezri Konsa at the club, according to The Daily Mirror‘s Neil Moxley. 

Villa paid £12m to sign the defender from Brentford in July 2019 following their promotion back to the Premier League.

He is five short of a century of appearances for the club in all competitions, having played in 25 of their 31 Premier League matches so far this season.

Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, the 24-year-old still has more than four years remaining on his contract in the Midlands.

Moxley wrote for The Daily Mirror that Konsa’s position at Aston Villa is now ‘under scrutiny’ ahead of the summer transfer window. Intriguingly, the same can be said for centre-back partner and club captain Tyrone Mings, along with Douglas Luiz.

If one or both centre-backs leave, a possible replacement is Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez, with Villa set to test the Reds’ ‘resolve’ to keep the 24-year-old at Anfield with an offer for one of their ‘top targets’.

There was probably a time when Villa were desperate to keep Konsa.

This is a player who finished second in The Birmingham Mail’s 2021 Aston Villa Player of the Year poll behind Emiliano Martinez, while The Athletic‘s David Ornstein revealed last year that the 24-year-old was being coveted by Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

However, it would appear that Gerrard isn’t all that impressed with what he’s seen from Konsa since taking over, and to make matters worse, the defender ‘really struggled’ in Saturday’s 4-0 home defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, in the words of The Athletic‘s Gregg Evans.
