Rene Meulensteen reveals personal challenge after leaving Manchester United

Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has opened up on overcoming a personal health challenge.

Meulensteen was promoted to first-team coach at United by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2007 and he spent six years in that position. In those years, United won eight major trophies, including four Premier League titles and a triumph in the Champions League.

The Dutchman left United in 2013 following Ferguson's departure and David Moyes' appointment and he's now assistant at Australia's national team, however, Meulensteen had been battling a personal health challenge over the last few years. Meulensteen's eyesight had gradually worsened and that had an impact on his standard of life — something he was keen to seek specialist help for.

Meulensteen went for a consultation and eye health checks at Optegra Eye Hospital, Manchester, and he decided to have eye surgery to address the problem. He's now opened up on the operation to reassure others who are thinking of doing the same.

“My vision was getting worse and was starting to take energy from me. It was causing frustration especially in the stadium where I could not see properly; and it was getting me down," Meulensteen said.

“So many people I have spoken to are fearful about their eyes, which is understandable, as so was I, but honestly there was nothing to it. It was easier than going to the dentist – I could not believe how it did not feel invasive at all, I hardly even felt any pressure and it was done so quickly. There really was nothing to it and certainly nothing to be fearful of.
