Red-hot Thorniewood United thump Chryston in searing temperatures

Thorniewood United proved too hot for Chyston on Monday night as they claimed a 6-1 win in searing temperatures.

As the mercury pushed towards 30 degrees Celsius, The Wood were on fire and 2-0 up by the break. In the second half they added a third, before David O’Donnell netted twice in the second half to seal his hat-trick, with Nick Mullen also on the score-sheet.

Boss Jamie Nesbitt has been delighted with their preparations so far ahead of next week’s West of Scotland First Division opener against Blantyre Vics and hopes his players go and enjoy the season.

He said: “It was tough-going in the heat, fair play to both teams.

“Hopefully we’re settled enough and have learned enough through the Conferences to be able to go in and compete. They’ve earned it and should go and enjoy it.

“We’ve taken a couple of amateur games but they’ve been good amateur teams that we’ve played.”

Tannochside visit in the final friendly and Nesbitt hopes there is a community feel to Saturday’s games against their local amateur side.

He added: “It will be another good test, they’re a good side and knock the ball about well.

“There will be a wee local thing to it, too. There will be a few people from the community who go and watch Tannochside and don’t watch Thorniewood, so I’m sure it will be a nice encounter and we’ll look forward to that one.

“Saturday will be a real test for us.”
