Realistically, does Hayden Coulson have a future at Middlesbrough?

Hayden Coulson has been at Middlesbrough for his whole career after progressing through the club’s youth system. 

The 23-year-old signed his first professional contract with the club back in 2016.

Before he made an appearance for Boro, Coulson was loaned out to St Mirren who at the time had just been promoted to the Scottish Premiership.

After making his debut with the Scottish club, the youngster would only go on to make 11 appearances and score one goal before returning to his parent club having his loan cut short.

In the January transfer window of 2019, Coulson was then sent on loan to Cambridge United in League Two.

Following 14 appearances with Cambridge, in the 2019-20 season Coulson was given an opportunity for Middlesbrough.

He made his Boro debut on the opening day of the season and scored his first goal for the club in February 2020.

In total, Coulson made 29 Championship appearances for the club.

However at the start of the next season, the 23-year-old was sent to League One Ipswich on loan.

By January, he had made only six appearances and had an injury so was recalled by his parent club to then joined Peterborough United on loan until the end of the season.

Since joining Peterborough, Coulson has made six league appearances but has not been part of the squad for the last seven games.

As it stands, it looks unlikely that Hayden Coulson has a future at Middlesborough.

Coulson has played for a season for Boro before and wasn’t favoured enough to stay in the side and since then, their standards have only risen.

Middlesbrough currently sit eighth in the Championship and three points from the play-offs with a game in hand.
