Real Madrid secure La Liga title ahead of Man City Champions League second leg

Manchester City's Champions League opponents Real Madrid secured the La Liga title ahead of a crucial match on Wednesday night.

Rodrygo managed a brace while Marco Asensio and Karim Benzema also made it onto the scoresheet as the Spanish side put Espanyol to the sword. Madrid are now 17 points clear of second place Sevilla with four matches remaining ensuring that they wrestled the crown back from city rivals Atletico.

The result was also an important milestone for manager Carlo Ancelotti. He became the first manager to win the league in all five of Europe's major leagues.

Ancelotti will now be chasing more personal success in the Champions League. If they manage to beat City and eventually lift the Champions League, Ancelotti would become the first manager to win the trophy formerly known as the European Cup on four occasions.

However, this is a big if as Real will need to overturn a 4-3 deficit should they wish to progress to Paris. Pep Guardiola's side are on a roll themselves having secured their own 4-0 victory away at Leeds United on Saturday.

Rodri, Nathan Ake, Gabriel Jesus and Fernandinho all scored to lift City back to the top of the Premier League. They had been temporarily knocked off top spot by Liverpool who won in the early kick off at Newcastle.
