Real Madrid's Champions League comeback vs Man City saved Manchester United from nightmare final

In the 73rd minute of Manchester City's Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid, Manchester United fans were faced with a horrible reality. Riyad Mahrez's late goal made the score 5-3 on aggregate and with the Spanish side failing to have a single shot on target up until that point, the writing seemed to be on the wall.

This presented the worst-case scenario for many United fans. They would have to watch a Champions League final desperate for both teams to lose.

Liverpool could potentially enter the match chasing a Treble or even a Quadruple - meaning they would either match or surpass United's glorious 1998-99 campaign under Sir Alex Ferguson - while City would have been looking to win their maiden European title. Thankfully, Madrid made sure that final didn't happen.

With the game entering its closing stages, Rodrygo got a goal back after being left open in the box and he then doubled his tally a minute later to make it 5-5 on aggregate and send the game into extra time. After just five minutes of extra time, Ruben Dias fouled Karim Benzema in the box and the French striker converted the resulting penalty. A cagey 25 minutes followed but Madrid and coach Carlo Ancelotti's experience in the competition showed as they secured their place in Paris.

At this point, it almost seems as though City will never win a Champions League title under Pep Guardiola. And for United fans who don't have much to celebrate right now, the chance to revel in their noisy neighbours' misfortune is about as good as it gets.
