Reading FC's transfer mistake exposed as former defender linked with £10m Nottingham Forest move

Former Reading FC defender Omar Richards is being linked with a return to English football with Premier League new boys Nottingham Forest.

The left-back spent last season at Bayern Munich after ending his five-year association with Royals.

The 24-year-old made just 17 appearances in league and cup for Bayern in 2021/22, but did win two trophies including the Bundesliga title.

Sky reporter Florian Plettenberg says Richards could be heading back to England as Reds boss Steve Cooper eyes defensive reinforcements for the 2022/23 campaign. He says the fee could be between €10m and €12m for the player who has three years to run on his contract in Bavaria.

Bayern are reportedly willing to let him leave, although there is no agreement yet between the two clubs. Further talks are planned, Florian adds, as Richards weighs up his next move.

The defender made 104 appearances for Royals after coming through the club's academy. He ended up leaving on a free transfer as Reading let him run down his contract, a move they will now be kicking themselves for given the fee he is now attracting after just one year abroad.
