Raymond Galligan to focus on managing as trio aim for Cavan job

Cavan goalkeeper Raymond Galligan is one of three people shortlisted for the vacant Breffni County position with the Lacken man being put forward as manager rather than player-manager, RTÉ Sport understands.

Galligan's playing days at that level would come to an end if he succeeds the outgoing Mickey Graham, and almost certainly if he is unsuccessful too.

The Anglo Celt has reported that the other two names short-listed for the position are Micheál McDermott and Jason O’Reilly.

Galligan, who captained Cavan to their 2020 Ulster title, their first since 1997, joined the squad in 2006 first as a forward and latterly as a goalkeeper.

A dead-ball specialist, he won an All-Star for his 2020 exploits and led the side to the first-ever Tailteann Cup final in 2022 where they lost to Westmeath.

McDermott previously managed Clare while he also guided Ramor United to the 2016 Cavan title. He has been linked to the Monaghan and Meath jobs in the past.

O’Reilly also has a county title on his resume – with Cavan Gaels – and he was part of Terry Hyland’s management team with Leitrim.

The deadline for nominations from clubs was Sunday night and Cavan GAA will now appoint a sub-committee to move the process forward.

Earlier this month, Larry Reilly was appointed as Cavan’s new under-20 manager, replacing the outgoing Damien Donohoe.
