“Rapidly becoming a fan favourite” – Sunderland fan pundit delivers verdict on recent signing

Sunderland made a real impression on transfer deadline day in January, with Jermain Defoe’s return to the Stadium of Light creating lots of headlines.

However another deal that went through that night could end up being one of the best pieces of business that the Black Cats do in a long time.

That is the signing of Jay Matete from Fleetwood Town, who has started his life on Wearside in impressive fashion.

The 21-year-old had made 20 League One appearances this season for the Cod Army, which prompted Sunderland to make their move late in the day.

One person who has been impressed with Matete in his six appearances so far for Sunderland is Football League World’s Black Cats fan pundit Jack Austwicke, who has reserved special praise for the midfielder.

“Jay Matete is rapidly becoming a fan favourite since his move from Fleetwood,” Austwicke said.

“On the ball he’s brilliant, he’s skilful, he’ll beat a man and you’ll hear the noise around the ground when he’s on the ball.

“He runs at players and he spreads the play very well and even off the ball he’s very aware of himself.

“In the games I’ve watched him in so far he’s been outstanding – arguably our best player.

“It’s looking like he could prove to be a very solid signing for Sunderland.”
