Rangers starlet opens up on Dundee switch, advice from Stephen Kelly and facing Charlie Adam

Rangers starlet Ben Williamson says his main aim at Dundee is to gain promotion to the Premiership as he opened up on seeking advice from an Ibrox team-mate over Gary Bowyer.

The Light Blues youngster admits he had a number of options for this season but as soon as he spoke to the Dark Blues boss his mind was made up. That didn't stop him seeking advice from Stephen Kelly, who played under him at Salford City, with nothing but positive things said about the Dens Park gaffer.

Before heading out for the season, the 20-year-old was handed an extra year on his Rangers contract by Giovanni van Bronckhorst - which he described as a 'big confidence boost' as he bids to play regular first-team football at Dundee and learn as much as possible.

He holds fond memories of his new club as he opened up on a first moment in senior football against the Dee - and the welcome then skipper Charlie Adam gave him.

Speaking to The Courier, he said: "My main aim is getting promoted – I love winning.

“That would be good but, on a personal level, it’s about getting as many games under my belt as I can.

“I want to score more goals and progress as a player.

“Getting the extra year on my contract at Rangers is a big confidence boost.

“And, to come here, I just need to improve as a player, get as much experience I can and take as much as I can from the players here.

“I had a good few options, a few in the Championship, but as soon as I spoke to Gary Bowyer, my mind was made up.

“The way he spoke and his history of working with young players suited me.

“I spoke to Stephen Kelly, who played for him at Salford, and all he said were good things.”
