Rangers now face “no-brainer” decision involving 512-game Ibrox duo, journalist says

Rangers’ decision to either keep hold or let go of midfielders Steven Davis and Scott Arfield this summer is a ‘no-brainer’, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Ibrox outfit have several experienced stars approaching the end of their current contracts, and manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst must choose who he wants to retain the services of.

Connor Goldson, Allan McGregor and Leon Balogun are in similar situations to Davis and Arfield, meaning Rangers could lose a significant number of their leadership group in one transfer window.

But the Glasgow giants’ managing director Stewart Robertson revealed the club have not resigned themselves to losing their ageing stars on free transfers just yet.

“Ross Wilson is having talks with all the players whose contracts expire in the summer,” he told Sky Sports (via The Scotsman).

Davis has been a fantastic servant to Rangers throughout his two spells at the club, registering 25 goals and 70 assists in 335 appearances, claiming four league titles, one Scottish Cup and two League Cups along the way.

And Arfield has also proven his worth since arriving from Burnley in 2018, providing 51 goal contributions in 177 outings, playing a key role in the club’s first top-flight title success in 10 years last term.

Rangers have risen back to the top of Scottish football after their dramatic decline, and the part that Davis and Arfield have played cannot be overlooked.

Therefore, O’Rourke believes the club’s hierarchy face a simple decision when it comes to the futures of the experienced engine room operators.
