Rangers face ‘big fight’ to keep ‘phenomenal’ 27 G/A ace

Rangers were always going to face ‘a big fight’ to keep hold of star striker Alfredo Morelos this summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 25-year-old has entered the final 18 months of his current contract and has sparked speculation that he’s edging towards the Ibrox exit door after switching agents.

Morelos has established himself as one of Scottish football’s most prodigious talents since arriving from HJK Helsinki in 2017.

In 224 appearances for Rangers, the Colombia international has registered 113 goals and 51 assists, playing a pivotal part as they claimed their first top-flight title in a decade last season.

And Morelos has continued to excel throughout 2021/22, racking up 27 goal contributions in all competitions for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s charges.

However, his time with the Glasgow giants could be coming to an end after it was revealed that he’s changed representatives.

The upcoming summer transfer window could be the last opportunity Rangers get to receive a substantial fee for their talisman if he refuses to put pen to paper on fresh terms, meaning the club’s hierarchy have a big decision to make.

Given his previous exploits north of the border, Morelos is unlikely to be short of potential suitors should he seek a new challenge next term.

And O’Rourke believes the Gers were always going to have a fight on their hands to retain the services of the South American, even if he didn’t alter his agent.

He told GiveMeSport: “It was going to be a big fight for Rangers this summer to keep hold of him, no matter who the agent was. I think it was always going to be a case of Morelos will be linked with a move away.”
