Rangers drop Europa League golden ticket as Ross McCausland strikes but Cantwell storm brews – 5 talking points

Rangers future in the Europa League still hangs in the balance after a disappointing 1-1 draw against Aris Limassol at Ibrox.

Philippe Clement’s side produced a sub-standard display as the Cypriots left Govan with a deserved point. Shavy Babicka opened the scoring for the visitors after Rangers winger Todd Cantwell gifted Aris possession. He was hooked by Clement before half-time and his replacement - Northern Irish youngster Ross McCausland - levelled in the second half.

The draw leaves Rangers in second place in Group C, a point behind leaders Real Betis. But Sparta Prague’s surprise victory over the Spaniards also puts them in contention to qualify going into the final match in a fortnight. Rangers now need to win in Betis or hope Aris do them a favour against Sparta - who are a point behind - to go through.

The performance last night was arguably the worst of Clement’s reign so far. Knowing a victory would secure European football beyond Christmas, his side failed to hit the heights of their previous Ibrox wins over Betis and Sparta. McCausland’s terrific finish to equalise was the highlight but - despite Brazilian striker Danilo missing a couple of second half chances - they rarely threatened the Aris goalkeeper.

It’s never good for any player when they’re hooked before half-time in a game. And after Todd Cantwell suffered that fate against Aris, it raises the question of what his future looks like under boss Clement at Rangers.

The midfielder is clearly not happy at the Belgian deploying him on the right wing, while the likes of Sam Lammers and Tom Lawrence occupy his favoured number 10 berth.
